Indiana Medicare Savings Program (MSP) 2026: Limits and How to Apply

· Updated October 26, 2026

By Sharon Ben-Moshe · Founder & Editor

The State of Indiana provides comprehensive Medicare premium support through the Family and Social Services Administration. Unlike most neighboring Midwestern states that adhere strictly to federal baseline limits, Indiana established expanded income thresholds for its Medicare Savings Programs, allowing more Hoosier seniors to qualify for financial support.

Indiana expanded MSP income limits for 2026

Indiana sets its income standards higher than federal minimums across all three tiers:

  • Qualified Medicare Beneficiary (QMB): Monthly income ceiling of $2,015 for an individual or $2,725 for a married couple. FSSA pays Part A premiums, Part B premiums, deductibles, and coinsurance.
  • Specified Low-Income Medicare Beneficiary (SLMB): Monthly income ceiling of $2,281 for an individual or $3,086 for a married couple. FSSA covers the monthly Part B premium.
  • Qualified Individual (QI): Monthly income ceiling of $2,481 for an individual or $3,357 for a married couple. Covers the monthly Part B premium on a first-come allocation schedule.

Resource standards in Indiana

While Indiana expanded its income criteria, the state continues to apply federal resource limits. Countable assets cannot exceed $9,950 for an individual or $14,910 for a couple. Countable assets include cash, checking and savings accounts, certificates of deposit, and stock portfolios. Exempt assets include your primary home, one automobile, and irrevocable burial contracts.

The $20 general income disregard

Indiana caseworkers apply a standard $20 unearned income disregard when calculating countable monthly income. If an individual receives $2,030 in gross monthly Social Security payments, the $20 disregard reduces countable income to $2,010, fitting cleanly under the $2,015 QMB cap.
